Restore the Shutters on Your Historic Home
Handmade, wooden shutters are integral to many historic houses in the United States. For the majority of four centuries, shutters were used to keep houses warm in the winter, and cool during the summer. The purpose of shutters was to protect the house from rain, sleet, ice, hail, snow, and the sun. Shutters were once opened every morning and closed every night, with the most popular design being the louvered shutter.

At a time when central heating and air conditioning was non-existent, louvered shutters were popular because they allowed the house to breathe. This means, during the summer months, the sun could be kept out of the house while also keeping the house ventilated and cool. Only in the last half-century or so have exterior shutters assumed a more decorative role with fixed exterior shutters.
