We rank wooden exterior shutters by the size of their parts, with the 3 main groupings being light weight, medium weight and heavy weight. Heavy weight shutters can further be sorted by the type of joinery used, with pegged mortise and tennon being the best. We consider a heavy weight shutter made of redwood with deep louver pockets and pegged mortise and tenon joints to be “Premium”

Our shutters are 1-3/8” thick, with 2-1/4” wide stiles. Our louvers are 3/8” x 1-3/8”. Our rails range from 3-1/4” wide to 5-1/4” wide to provide a strong mechanical joint. All of these details work together to produce a strong and long lasting heavy weight shutter.
